fresh start, freshly squeezed

It’s a new year. A beautifully crisp, bright day.

Time to get the juicer out.

I have a plan to make 2010 fabulous, but first I need a little pick-me-up of the non-alcoholic variety. This concoction should sweep the cobwebs away and aid phoenix-like renewal.

Carrot, Apple, Ginger and Lime Juice, taken from Nigel Slater’s Thirst

a lime
5 or 6 medium-sized carrots
thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled
2 apples

Roll the lime on the table with the palm of your hand, this will help it to release as much juice as possible. Cut it in half and squeeze it into a large glass (or halve the juice between two glasses – see below). Put the carrots through a juicer, then the peeled ginger. Cut the apples up roughly (no need to peel them first), remove the stalks, and put through the juicer. Ensure all the juices are well mixed.

This makes enough for one very large glass, or two smaller ones if you feel like sharing.

Now get going on your New Year’s resolutions. This is the year I’m going to start writing that novel…what will you do?

‘Come to the edge,’ he said.
They said, ‘We are afraid.’
‘Come to the edge,’ he said.
They came.
He pushed them and they flew.

Glad you added the quote at the bottom there; I must admit that I’m not a fan of the pulversied mixed fruit concoctions! Do you have a top tip for those of us without a juicer? When I make wet massala in my little blender, it’s never perfectly smooth and I have to add quite a lot of liquid to get it to puree properly, and lumps in a drink are never pleasant!

You can’t beat freshly squeezed orange juice, or what about a smoothie done in the blender? – then the lumps won’t matter!
