I couldn’t resist this. You won’t be surprised, since I haven’t exactly been reticent about my fondness for rotisserie chicken.

101 Things to Do with Rotisserie Chicken is one of those books that has been designed to look like it was obtained free with coupons during the 1950s; in fact it was published in 2009. Retrotastic. My favourite quote from what I’ve read so far is:

“Whenever you purchase a rotisserie chicken, if your budget can handle it, buy two, not just one.”

My thoughts exactly.

The recipes are split into categories: appetizers; sandwiches; salads; soups and stews; casseroles; pasta sauces; and skillet and stir-fry dishes. I am convinced that somewhere amongst the more wacky-sounding creations, there will be a few gems. Granted, I probably won’t be making Puckerberry Chicken Sandwiches (cream cheese, cranberries, pecans, marmalade, raisin bread…shall I go on?), but the Soba Noodles with Spinach and Chicken, and the Savoury Pear-Chicken Salad, sound pretty good – and I think it would be worth inviting some friends round to partake of the Squawkamole Quesadillas just for the sheer pleasure of announcing the name of the dish.

If rotisserie chicken isn’t your thing, not to worry. You can turn instead to one of the other books in the series. 101 Things to Do with Tofu perhaps? 101 Things to Do with Grits? How about 101 Things to Do with A Tortilla? 101 Things to Do With Gelatin…REALLY?

Grits: the least-appealingly named foodstuff I know.

Sign of the times, though; “Whenever you purchase a rotisserie chicken….” What’s wrong with cooking your own damn chicken? Wholeheartedly agree with the double-purchasing strategy; the same maxim may apply to sausages, bottles of wine and, esoterically, packets of instant dumplings.

Best part of the chicken? Skin, every time. Nothing like the feeling of schmaltz dripping off your chin!

Nothing at all wrong with roasting a chicken! There is just something SO good about the rotisserie variety…

Rotisserie chicken is a wonder to behold. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
