teapigs

After tasting teapigs peppermint tea on a recent visit to the Foyles café (where I navigated the complex and multifarious temptations of the adjoining cookery section with pleasing restraint), I proceeded to go a little crazy on their very nice website and ordered some for home consumption.  Four days later, a cardboard box of satisfying size arrived, filled with my goodies.

I was impressed by their lack of wasteful packaging and also by the fact that the bags are biodegradable. Perhaps I should add that these are not actually mere ‘bags’ but silky mesh ‘tea temples’, and according to the teapigs website, ‘If the teabag is a bedsit, then the tea temple is a detached house with Georgian pillars and conservatory’. They are indeed things of beauty (they were discovered, unsurprisingly, in Japan).

Aesthetics aside, and rather more importantly, this stuff tastes GOOD. I have been drinking their peppermint leaf tea on a daily basis for the past couple of weeks, and this morning I had a sublime cup of chai made with soya milk. teapigs use only whole leaf tea (or whole leaf herbs or whole flowers), and boy, can you notice the difference – in flavour, scent and appearance.

Big thumbs up. If you can’t find it in your local shops, it’s probably worth ordering in bulk on their website to qualify for free postage. Trust me, once you’ve tried this, you will be a convert; the fruits of my initial spending splurge are dwindling at an alarming rate.

The matcha is next on my list to try. Apparently it has superpowers…!
